Take Action! on Behalf of Palestine

This panel will include the popular animated Israel/Palestine–a short introduction that sets the context for the moment we are now in. We will then dive into three presentations focused on various ways we can all Take Action to support the Palestinian campaign for liberation and equality. 

Estee Chandler will present a quick background on the Palestinian civil society call for BDS–Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions; a broad set of non-violent strategies which educate the public as well as creating economic and social pressure for change. The three kinds of boycott campaigns will be discussed, as well as the S in BDS–sanctions!

Bert Newton, leading the Pasadena Divestment Campaign describes the campaign via a short film by Robert Corsini, followed by a presentation by Hedab Tarifi and Teri Stein explaining the details of the campaign advocating for Pasadena Police and Fire pension plans to divest from companies supporting. Even if we don’t personally have investments supporting Israeli apartheid, we are likely connected to organizations, companies, unions and religious communities that do. 

Randy Hein-Lamb will then talk about Bearing Witness to Israeli Apartheid by joining a delegation to Palestine. He will discuss his experiences, opportunities for us all to join delegations and how we can use the knowledge we gain to put hope into Action for Palestinian rights and freedom. 

Our panel will also try to answer questions about Taking Action as citizens of the world to protect the Palestinian people and provide support in their movement for justice which they have so long been denied. 

Panelists:  Estee Chandler, Hedab Tarifi, Teri Stein, and Randy Hein-Lamb

Hedab Tarifi was born in Gaza, Palestine. She lived in Kuwait until after the first Gulf War, when she moved to the US. Hedab holds a bachelor degree in Computer Software Engineering from University of Florida and an E-Business MBA from University of Phoenix. Hedab worked as an IM Program Manager at General Electric Energy for 20 years. She is now an IT Consultant and on her way to become a certified Financial Planner. Hedab has been active in the Muslim community in Southern California since 1994, working on building bridges and bringing people together. She served on the board of several non-profit organizations, including the New Horizon School Los Angeles.

Estee Chandler is a native Angeleno and longtime film and media professional who now focuses her work on human rights. In 2010 she lead the launch of the Los Angeles chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, and now proudly serves as the Board Chair of JVP Action, JVP’s 501c4 sister organization.  Along with Nagwa Ibrahim she is has hosted and produced KPFK’s long running radio show Middle East in Focus since 2014.

Teri Stein is a lawyer, writer, and organizer, with four decades of work in social justice movements. She founded the Legal Aid Pop Up Clinic, which paired volunteer attorneys with community organizations to bring assistance to underserved communities. She has also provided know your rights workshops to thousands of individuals across Southern California. For her advocacy, Teri has been honored multiple times by both the Los Angeles County Bar Association and the State Bar of California. Among other organizations, she is a member of Pasadena 4 Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. Teri is a graduate of Stanford Law School, and a former clerk for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Randy Heyn-Lamb is a retired nurse and current social justice activist with immigration, racial justice, gun violence prevention, death penalty, nuclear disarmament and environmental concerns in addition to a 25 yr long passion for justice and equal rights in Palestine. He currently co-chairs the Middle East Ministry at All Saints Church in Pasadena, co-chairs the LA Chapter of Sabeel, the Palestinian Liberation Theology Center, and is on the Board of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship.
